Instead of shaking our heads in despair, we must be more observant of our faults. There must be – and there are – reasons why we can’t combat COVID-19 effectively. Apparently, people in the mass communication department, travel agencies, or those with responsibilities towards their family have to take flights often. It affects the spread of the virus when people venture to other states and countries. Often, you don’t have a chance. The best you can do to minimize the damage is to isolate yourself from your friends and family completely. When a person returns home from another province, state, or country with high corona rates, there are some precautions that must be taken. This helps ensure no disease gets passed on from one individual to the other.

The Six-feet Rule

As a precaution against coronavirus, people have adopted the six-feet rule when they go grocery shopping or outside in general. This standard is best described as a reference point, not a hard line. Apparently, droplets may travel farther than 6 feet if a person sneezes or coughs hard enough. The minimum distance a droplet takes to settle is 6 feet, so it’s best to utilize a wider space if you have it. Better be safe than sorry, right? 

The six-feet rule is aimed at people that aren’t quarantined together. Families don’t abide by it. However, a person who has been in a different state has to be more considerate. Travelers have to keep their distance from everyone after they land, may it be family or friends. Remember, the virus can be transmitted when you don’t even have symptoms of the disease. You could be an unknowing carrier of COVID-19. Do a favor on your family and friends and tell them about the six-feet rule (or shout if you’re keeping a distance, anything works as long as the people you love are healthy and safe!). 

Self-Isolation

Locking yourself up in a room as soon as you get home does not mean you are rude at this time. In fact, it means that you are extremely thoughtful, over-protective and caring for those you love. If a family member is going to drive you back from the airport, make sure that only one person comes to receive you. Keep your face masks on and do not sit on the passenger seat with the driver. Instead, sit at the back and keep your face to the window. Make your intentions clear: all you want is for your family to be safe, even if it comes at the cost of a much-needed bear hug. 

When you reach home, get yourself a separate room and stay put. Imagine your clothes, gifts and all other items of possession to be infected. Even if they are not, we can’t take any risks. Inform your family that you will be retiring for a self-isolation period of about 10-14 days and that you should be served food separately. You should pick up your meals from a point in the kitchen, wash your dishes yourself, and put them back in the same spot. Don’t even leave the room without a mask on. Don’t let anyone interact with you without ensuring you have a wall or door in between you. They used to talk through holes in walls in Shakespeare’s times, so what’s the problem with it now?

Disinfect Yourself 

As mentioned earlier, everything you own should be considered infectious, even if it isn’t. When you return home from a cheap international flight you must change your clothes and store them in a plastic bag. Don’t wash them with the rest of the laundry- you don’t want your belongings to get mixed up with the rest of your family’s. Utilize a spare bathroom or inform everyone when you need to use a restroom so that they may keep their distance. It’s a wise move to keep a disinfectant spray in the washroom, and as you leave, you must spray the air. No one should be allowed to use the restroom for the next 3 hours.                                       

It may get tricky to not cross paths with your family if you have a small living space, but it’s not impossible. The traveller should be the most strict about maintaining extreme precautions. It is recommended to run yourself through a coronavirus test before you plan on meeting your family. This is the only test that requires a negative outcome from you. Isn’t that great? However, this does not mean that you don’t need to isolate yourself or maintain precautionary measures when you return home. Apparently, there have been many rumors regarding the authenticity of COVID-19 test equipment worldwide. There are two types of coronavirus tests, swab tests and blood tests. Swab tests are taken through the sampling of mucous from the throat or nose to detect viral RNA. This shows us whether a person has been infected with coronavirus currently. Blood tests determine whether a person had contracted COVID-19 in the past, and whether or not he or she is immune now. The World Health Organization has recommended the Public Health sectors of every country to ‘test, test, test.’ This goes for you, too, traveler.

How Accurate Are COVID-19 Test Results? 

It’s sad to say that the tests are not completely accurate. This is why you must isolate yourself from your loved ones if you were out on a cheap international flight recently. 

According to the World Economic Forum: 

‘No test is 100% accurate. Although tests can perform well in ideal laboratory conditions, in real life lots of other factors affect accuracy including the timing of the test, how the swab was taken, and the handling of the specimen.

Early on in the novel coronavirus outbreak, doctors started reporting cases of people who had coronavirus which had been missed by swab tests – also known as “false negatives”. We don’t know for sure how often these false negatives occur in the UK, but evidence from China suggests up to 30 out of every 100 people with coronavirus might test negative.’

You must be on the lookout for symptoms of COVID-19 while you are quarantined. Keep a personal temperature sensor and note down your temperature fluctuations regularly. If you are someone who catches a cold often, you may have some immunity issues already. Try to regulate your immune system by offering nutritious food rather than online food deliveries. Focus on yourself by listing your goals for the time when this lockdown is over.
